A Crochet Experiment

I don't crochet much. Not for any particular reason, it's just that I seem to choose knitting projects. I even have some nice hooks from Knit Picks that I rarely use. But, I decided to change that for once.

I have been wanting to try tapestry crochet for a long time now so I decided to just go ahead and DO IT ALREADY. Ahem. Here's my first try:

It'll be an "A" when it's done. I plan to make several squares, the plan right now is for four, from “Tapestry Crochet” by Renate Kirkpatrick then sew them together to make a pillow cover. If it doesn't exactly fit a pillow I'll figure something out when the time comes. A border can always be crocheted. Went to the stash for the yarn for this project; well, technically my Mom's stash. You might recognize the yarn from my Wee Niece's Hudson Bay Wallaby.

I think I need to tighten up my gauge for this technique since you can clearly see the strand being carried along the back. Not worried about it this time around though as I deliberately went with a hook I thought would give me a loose gauge while I tried this out. Since I'm trying something new I want to be certain I can see my stitches clearly.

Current Weather
-8C and cloudy. Might even be snowing depending on exactly where you are.

A Quick Hat

I have a bunch of Wool-Ease in my stash that I hate. Not that I hate the yarn itself, it's actually not bad for an inexpensive wool blend; I hate having it in my stash. So I'm making it up into hats which I'll probably give away. Maybe I'll donate them to a charity such as Inn From the Cold or something. I haven't decided yet.

Pattern: Improvised
Yarn: Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Solids
Needle: 6.5mm
Gauge: 12 stitches and 18 rows = 10 cm

Current Weather
1C and snowing.

Snow Day

There was a large dump of snow here, about 25 cm, and I couldn't get out of the driveway yesterday due to the ice on the street (it's a hill) so, since I'm not setup to work from home, I (mostly) finished my Wee Niece's second Mauve Wallaby. Finished off the Kitchener Stitch this evening.

I just can't get enough of this pattern, it's truly Wonderful! Modified to use sport weight yarn so the gauge is nothing close to what the pattern calls for, I think it came out nicely though. Should be the right size(ish) for an almost 2 year old. Whatever will I do when she's too cool to wear hand knit sweaters?

Pattern: Wonderful Wallaby
Yarn: Snuggly Wuggly Big!
Needle: 3mm and 4mm
Gauge: 21 stitches and 28 rows = 10 cm

Current Weather
-26C and clear. That's COLD no matter how you slice it. And it's going to get COLDER overnight with no clouds to hold in some heat. The streets are terribly icy, especial in intersections, and the city still hasn't finished plowing. Ugh, already I can't wait for Spring.

Space Hat

Actually, it's a Wurm for my sister here in Calgary. But I knit it while watching documentaries about space, things like the How the Universe Works and The Inexplicable Universe with Neil deGrasse Tyson. And it's black, so I decided to name it the Space Wurm. Held two strands of fingering weight yarn together to get the gauge, seems to have worked out well, other than that it was knit as written.

Pattern: Wurm
Yarn: Knit Picks Stroll Solids, Heathers & Twists in Black
Needle: 3.0mm and 4.0mm
Gauge: 24 stitches and 34 rows = 10 cm in stockinette stitch

Current Weather
-11C and partly cloudy. Back in the deep freeze.
